Laying of Plans - part 1

Ok, you got to level 30.  You are able to play ranked games with a team.  Now what do you do?

In the first part of "The Art of War" Sun Tzo said:

The art of war, then, is governed by five constant factors, to be taken into account in one's deliberations, when seeking to determine the conditions obtaining in the field. These are: (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth; (4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline.

Moral Law

By "Moral Law" he said that a leader should be a good leader but that people under that leader should follow the leader "regardless of their lives, undismayed by any danger".

This translate to League of Legends in the following way.  The person with the most experiece should lead and the other four team members should follow his or her orders without question.

During a game, a team leader should not have to yell or shout "GO IN, GO IN!!!"  A team leader should just have to say in a calm voice "Malphite...go in".  When a team leader says something, everybody obeys.

However, after a game, team members should reflect on plays but during the game - everybody obeys the team leader.

If a team leader repeatedly fails to deliver, he or she should have the character to step down as a team leader and let somebody else try.

Heaven

By "Heaven" Sun Tzu meant night and day, cold and heat, times and seasons. This translates into League of Legends as "Map Awareness".  Everyone on your team, needs to learn Summoner's Rift like the back of their hand.  More importanly, your team should have vision (by placing wards) on this map.  There are good places to put wards and better places to put wards.  There are no bad places to put wards because they always provide vision.

Earth

Earth comprises distances, great and small; danger and security; open ground and narrow passes; the chances of life and death.  In other words, pick where you are going to fight.  In League of Legends, 5v5 tournaments are fought on Summoner's map.  There are places on this map that are advantageous for certain types of teams to fight.  There are places on the map that every team wants to control, like Dragon and Baron.  There are places in lanes that you want to control early in the game; depending on the type of champion you are playing.  Using the map to help you win is key to League of Legends.

The Commander

The Commander stands for the virtues of wisdom, sincerely, benevolence, courage and strictness.  Sportsmanship wins games.  League of Legends keeps statistics on players who tilt and players who encourage.  The data demonstrates clearly that players who encourage win more games.  League of Legends requires a player to be wise, sincere, kind, courageous, and being strict with yourself.

Method and Discipline

By method and discipline are to be understood the marshaling of the army in its proper subdivisions, the graduations of rank among the officers, the maintenance of roads by which supplies may reach the army, and the control of military expenditure.  In League of Legends, a player can go 14/1/0 but if he or she is support - he or she doesn't know the role of support and most likely lost the game.  Each of the five players must fulfill their role on the team.  By method and discipline, Sun Tzu is talking about fulfilling your role on a team.  There are different team compositions, but they only work if each member does what he or she is suppose to do.  Too many times, individual players ego's get in the way of the team objectives and cause the team to lose.  A tank that says "I am not going in, because I am going to die" can lose a game for a team.  Know your role and have the discipline to fulfill it.
