Laying of Plans - part 2

All warfare is based on deception.

Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.

Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and crush him.

If he is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him.

If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant.

If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them.

Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.

These military devices, leading to victory, must not be divulged beforehand.

Intepretation

This is a key to making game plans for League of Legends - DECEPTION.  The goal in League of Legends is obvious, take the enemy nexus.  Too often, teams will forget that this is the goal and chance kills when it is beneficial to take down an objective like dragon or a turret.  What often happens is that the other team will bait them into chasing them so that they forget to take the turret.

First and foremost, before any game your team should have a team plan, a strategy on what you are going to do to get the nexus.  Second, you will need to design a team around that strategy.  However, no matter what the strategy and the team composition - deception is key.  Invading, ganks, baiting, and spilt pushing are just some examples of how deception is used in League of Legends.

Invade

This is a common strategy at the beginning of the game to sneak attack their jungler to set the opposing team's jungler behind.  Junglers need their buffs (blue and red) and their jungle to level up and get gold.  If you are facing a strong opposing jungler, it may be worth planning an invasion of the enemies jungle at the beginning of the game.  Keys to invading and any sneak attack is having a tank champ with cc (crowd control).  For example, Thresh can be fairly tanky and can use his hook to grab the jungler or the champ helping the jungler at the beginning.  It is unadvisable to invade without tanks and without most of your team.  If some of your team has teleport, it will help them get back into lane after the invasion or sneak attack.

Ganks

These are an important factor in League of Legends and have to be planned.  These are the opportunity for a jungler to help lanes.  However, there needs to be a high degree of communication before and during a gank.  Before the gank even occurs, there are two things that should be communicated with the jungler.  First, that the enemy team has not properly warded the river.  Second, the enemy team is pushed enough towards your turret that they will probably not escape the gank.  In the image above, you can see red team is pushed towards the blue tower.  This will give the Nidalee (who is indicated that she is coming) the opportunity to flank Corki and Braum.  In addition, Morgana can trap Corki or Braum to prevent them escaping.  In this scenario Corki is the primary target, because he is the ADC and the most squishy.  If Braum dies first, Corki has time to shoot the champs who are focused on him.  But if Corki dies first, most likely Braum will die too, because he will be a long way from his turret and be facing three champs.  This is an important factor in a gank - during the gank, everybody on your team should be focused on the champion who causes the most damage.  If you get rid of that champ, your champs will be able to take the other enemy champs involved.  The initiater of the gank should be the jungler with immediate follow up by the jungler's team; however, if one of the other champs has some kind of cc, that champ can try to lock down the enemy ADC or APC.

Baiting

This is a fairly high level strategy because of its risk factor.  Baiting is having one of your team try to draw in two or three champs into an ambush.  The "bait" has to have the ability to kite, high mobility, and wisdom to keep the enemy team from giving up the chase.  For example, Sona is very good at baiting enemy champs.  She is seen as "squishy" and easy to kill.  However, Sona's Hymn of Valor (q) can easily poke enemy champs.  Her Song of Celerity (e) gives her movement speed to keep the enemy team from catching her.  Sona can speed up to enemy champs who can't close the gap between her and them, poke them with her Hymn of Valor (q), zoom out with her Song of Celerity (e), and keep harassing the enemy until they chase her, whereby she leads them into a bush where three other teammates are waiting to pounce.

Split Pushing

This can be a fairly effective strategy as long as players know when to quit split pushing.  Split pushing is having one champ in a lane push the lane while the other team keeps the enemy team busy.
